An Garda Síochána - Ireland's National Police and Security Service
Booth no. 4

An Garda Síochána

An Garda Síochána is the national police service of Ireland. The Mission of An Garda Síochána is to deliver professional policing and security services with the trust, confidence and support of the people we serve.

Following the establishment of the Irish Free State in 1922, the Dublin Metropolitan Police merged with the recently established An Garda Síochána in 1925.

Today, An Garda Síochána is a community based organisation with over 14,500 Garda and Civilian employees, who serve all sections of the community.

Headquartered in Dublin’s Phoenix Park, we are represented in every county in Ireland, listening to, acting and working with the community. The current Acting Garda Commissioner is Dónall O'Cualáin.

Some of An Garda Síochána’s core functions include:

the detection and prevention of crime;
ensuring our nation’s security;
reducing the incidence of fatal and serious injuries on our roads and improving road safety;
working with communities to prevent anti-social behaviour;
promoting an inter-agency approach to problem solving and improving the overall quality of life.

An Garda Síochána has a long established tradition of working closely with communities all across Ireland. By fostering and maintaining effective community partnerships, and ensuring a more visible Garda presence, we work to achieve a reduction in crime and the fear of crime in our communities.

Garda National Technical Bureau

The Garda Technical Bureau (GTB), established in 1934, and based at Garda Headquarters, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8, is a Forensic Laboratory providing expertise in several fields of the forensic sciences, including Dactyloscopy (Fingerprints), Ballistics, Forensic Photography, Forensic Surveying (Mapping) and Document & Handwriting Analysis. It also provides an expert Crime Scene Investigation function for An Garda Síochána in relation to serious crime scenes. It was established in the knowledge that forensic science and the analytical examination of crime scenes and items found therein, can add value to crime investigation by providing:

Independent evidence that a crime was committed.
Corroboration of other evidence.
Linkage of a primary crime scene to a suspect, injured party, or to secondary scenes.
A test of the accuracy/truth of witness statements.
Identification of a suspect.
Evidence to clear a suspect from the case.

Expert witnesses from the Garda Technical Bureau provide objective scientific evidence to the courts, and are permitted to give an expert opinion in relation to their findings.

The overarching function of the Garda Technical Bureau is to provide a high quality Crime Scene Investigation service (at scene and under laboratory conditions) to officers of An Garda Síochána and the Criminal Justice System, as well as assisting other Government departments and external bodies when asked to do so.
